The Hebrew Wikipedia community is made up of editors (Wikipedians) of all ages, diverse backgrounds, and varying professional expertise. All the volunteers who write Wikipedia work together to create and develop the largest and most comprehensive free encyclopedia in the Hebrew language. Each one brings their knowledge, passion, and commitment to producing quality, reliable, and accessible content for everyone.
Wikimedia Israel actively supports this volunteer community by providing guidance, organizing events, holding social activities, encouraging and assisting with writing competitions, supporting community-led initiatives, and more.
Among our various community-focused activities, we promote:
Birthday Meetups
Wikimedia Israel celebrates two major Wikipedia birthdays every year: the global Wikipedia birthday in January and the Hebrew Wikipedia birthday in July. These celebrations offer an opportunity to bring the community together, share accomplishments, recognize the contributions of Wikipedians, and celebrate the value of free knowledge. During the events, Wikipedians from across the country are invited to participate in lectures, social activities, and discussion circles.
“Thousand Words” Tours
“Thousand Words” is a long-standing project (launched in May 2007) that invites Wikipedians to go on short trips across Israel to photograph places, buildings, and landscapes. The aim is to enrich the collection of free, accessible images available through Wikimedia projects.
Online Lectures and Workshops, and Edit-a-thons
Wikimedia Israel organizes enrichment lectures and workshops on various topics including Wikipedia, free content, current technologies, and practical solutions to challenges faced by editors.
Additionally, online editing meetups are held, where editors can collaborate with experienced mentors. These sessions are especially valuable for new editors, offering them professional support and the opportunity to grow as skilled contributors through hands-on editing practice.
Writing Competitions
Wikimedia Israel encourages and supports writing competitions that challenge participants to write high-quality articles, expand the body of free knowledge, and improve the content quality on Wikipedia.
Among these, the standout initiative is the “From Stub to Featured” competition, which focuses on writing articles about notable women in various fields. This competition helps expand the coverage of women in Hebrew Wikipedia and promotes broader representation of women in history, science, the arts, and more.
Editing Marathons
Editing marathons are meaningful events that invite community members to collaboratively edit content on Wikipedia, learn from each other, and share experiences and successes.
Wikimedia Israel organizes special editing marathons in partnership with Artport, dedicated to writing articles about women in the arts. These marathons provide a unique opportunity to learn about and amplify the voices of female creators, artists, and leaders in the fields of art and culture.
