Wikimedia Israel

Behind Wikipedia, there's Wikimedia.

In a world where artificial intelligence tools are rapidly evolving—and where any type of content or information can spread without oversight—the challenge of distinguishing between truth and falsehood becomes even greater. In today’s era, where most people have access to massive amounts of content and information through the internet and social media, the need to preserve at least one reliable and trustworthy source of information is more critical than ever. Wikipedia, the world’s largest free encyclopedia, edited by a dedicated community of volunteers and subject-matter experts, stands as a trustworthy, accessible, and sustainable source of knowledge—and its importance continues to grow.

Wikimedia Israel, founded in 2007, is dedicated to promoting knowledge and education in Israel through 21st-century skills, digital and language literacy, and the creation and accessibility of free knowledge from a wide range of disciplines to the general public. The organization works in collaboration with the global Wikimedia movement, best known for its flagship project: Wikipedia—the largest free encyclopedia in the world. Within the movement, over 100,000 volunteers create free content in more than 300 languages.

Wikimedia Israel runs a variety of educational programs supporting Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects across all sectors of Israeli society, in both Hebrew and Arabic. These programs offer a collaborative framework for developing, preserving, and freely sharing knowledge, data, and content with the public at no cost.

The association operates in the spirit of the vision of Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales:
“Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That’s our commitment.”

Education

We promote the creation of free content through writing courses for the general public and specific groups—including seniors, neurodivergent people, and women. We also support teachers and implement educational programs in schools, as well as initiatives in academic institutions that integrate Wikipedia writing assignments into Hebrew and Arabic curriculum. In addition, we develop and provide self-learning materials for the broader public on how to contribute to Wikipedia.

Community

The community of Hebrew Wikipedia editors is the heart of the project. We work to strengthen and empower community members through workshops, lectures, writing competitions, cultural tours, and social events—alongside ongoing support for graduates of our courses.
