Like so much in western culture, in the face of the Internet our basic understanding of the nature of the future is changing. What once looked like a landscape spread out in front of us — the possibilities narrowing as they approach — is starting to look more like a platform that multiplies possibilities. This provides a counterpoint to our standard strategy for dealing with the future by anticipating our needs. We'll examine Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects as platform s that multiply their value by minimizing how much they anticipate user needs. What can be done to make these projects even more useful both to end users and to developers who increase the value of Wikipedia's information by putting it to new and surprising uses? |
